I recently had the chance to review a copy of Birth Plans for Dummies by Rachel Gurevich and Sharon Perkins, RN. I wanted to share it here because while I am done having my babies, I think there is a lot of great information for moms-to-be in this book.
I’ve talked about my
obsessive pregnancy reading and planning before, but I do think I learned a lot and I have generally fond memories of the whole process. I just gave myself to the fact that my body was somehow growing a human and I wanted to know as much about the whole thing as I could!
Birth Plans for Dummies is a great book because, in traditional “dummies” fashion, it’s simple and to the point. You can pick up the book and start reading at any point or start at the beginning and go from cover to cover. This book isn’t simply about creating a hospital birth plan. The authors do a great job of guiding you through the entire labor process from choosing the location, style and attendants that are right for you. They even take you through some breastfeeding and postpartum challenges you may face and provide tips and encouragement for navigating that new territory in a non-intimidating way.
I had a birth plan with both of my births, neither of which went as planned. That is the nature of labor and delivery and I knew that going in. But it was helpful to me to consider different scenarios and have an answer ready to go so we didn’t have to have any really serious conversations while I was trying to birth my child. Very helpful indeed!
