Have you ever been star struck? I don’t know what it is about famous people but they really are like magnets. I used to love getting autographs at concerts or getting my book signed. I was even an extra in the Freddie Prinze Jr. classic, Summer Catch.
I’ll just let that sink in for a moment.
You might think that because I walked arm in arm with Mark Blucas (they were filming our feet) or got a “way to go, extras” pep talk from Brian Dennehy that I think I’m people. Well folks, that would be just plain silly. I didn’t even have any lines. And even though I got free food and a lovely farmer’s tan, I wouldn’t exactly say I’d made it.
Getting a personal email, however, is a completely different story.
If you follow me on twitter, you might have seen this post:
This was immediately after seeing the movie trailer for The Men Who Stare at Goats, a movie based on one of my favorite books by Author, Jon Ronson. I got so excited about the movie because this was a really great book. I am always trying to get my friends to read it (and THEM, also by Jon Ronson). So, when I got home I decided to look up Ronson’s website and send him a quick congrats email. You know, because it’s not every day that your book is made into a movie. Even for a successful author. And not 2 minutes after I hit send I have this response in my inbox:
Yay! That’s so nice of you. Like being sprinkled with niceness. I’m on my way to embarrass myself on Colbert. Pray for me. I’m also writing a new book called The Psychopath Test.
Did you hear that? It was the sound of me dying. Or more aptly, my body dropping to the floor starting with my jaw. In this day and age one just doesn’t expect a reply. You send out an encouraging word just hoping that it gets to a real person! Not only did he write me back, but I am now only ONE degree of separation away from STEPHEN COLBERT. Bravo indeed. Super SUPER cool Jon Ronson.
Take that as a lesson all you would be rock stars, it’s easy and awesome to hit reply. So do it, and make someone’s day! And while you are waiting to get famous, check out The Men Who Stare At Goats!
