I came across this story today via my friend Amanda and I knew I had to write about it. In a nutshell, an Indiana mother forced her 14 year old son to wear a sign on the side of the road for 2 hours as punishment. The sign read:
I lie. I steal. I sell drugs. I don’t follow the law.
Dynesha Lax decided to take matters into her own hands when the courts’ ruling of probation and $300 in fees didn’t cut it. She needed to teach him a lesson and honestly, I have to agree with her.
Drivers who passed the boy actually called the police but Lax was not doing anything illegal. In her mind, a little embarrasment goes a long way in teaching her son, who is on the brink of continuing a very dark path, a valuable lesson.
Courts can only do so much.
I applaud this mother in her creative efforts to save her son and teach him right from wrong. She knew she couldn’t rely only on the legal system to keep him in line so she took an active role in his discipline. I hope that if I am ever faced with such a day that I will love my children enough to use any means necessary to get through to them and help them learn to make good choices.
As a parent, I can’t imagine watching my sons make these kinds of adult choices at such a young age. But it happens. It happens too much and more parents need to jump in with everything they have to stop it. I hope Dynesha Lax’s son learns from this and turns his life around. He is so blessed to have a mother who cares.
How far would you go to teach your children a lesson? Do you think this mother crossed the line?
