I’ve been hoping to get a new phone this summer. Planning, hoping, wishing praying. Whatever you want to call it. My phone is dying a slow and painful death and it needs to be replaced. But since I am one of a dying breed of cell phone users who just has a plain old cell phone (with texting!) I had no idea what I wanted.
Ok let’s be serious. We all want an iPhone. But, being an Alltel(now Verizon) customer who rarely drops a call, I wasn’t about to switch to AT&T. So I have been waiting (and waiting) for the big Verizon gets iPhone announcement. Only then the Droids got awesome and there are no apples in sight. So I started looking at Droids. I heard a lot of good things and my Dad loves his so I thought ok this will be good. Only, did you know that ALL plans are nationwide now? And you can’t get a lower plan rate with say, Southeast Coverage?
For a stay-at-home-mom like me, who rarely travels outside of the Southeast, this is just too much plan for me. Add that to the $20 texting fee and the $30 data plan, and you’ve got yourself a bill for $100/month. I know that seems relatively normal for most people and if we were still a two-income household, I might be able to justify it. But cmon, I don’t NEED Twitter apps and email and Facebook ON my phone. But my heart sank at the idea of replacing my boring old phone with another one exactly like it.
And then I found a secret passageway. Well, it was a secret to me anyway and I am so excited! Did you know you could get a “multimedia phone” that only uses a Data plan of $9.99/month? AND you can get a limited number of text messages for $5/month? It’s true! I also found an awesome deal at Best Buy that is running all week for an LG Chocolate Touch. And because there was some mistake on my Verizon account and I couldn’t get the phone from Best Buy, I spoke with a Customer Service rep at Verizon and they agreed to price match Best Buy and my phone will arrive on Wednesday! After what was an insanely frustrating day on Saturday, I feel like a kid in a candy shop! I get a phone with bells and whistles, and my bill goes up, ONE penny! Wee 🙂 Here is what I did,
– dropped plan from 750 minutes to 450 minutes (new cost 39.99/mo)
– Kept texts to 250 total messages ($5/mo)
– Added small data plan ($9.99/m0)
Total monthly bill plus tax = 54.98!
I found out that after all my Verizon to Verizon calls, I was literally using like 25 minutes a month! That right there covered the data plan. AND I got the new phone for FREE. Which rocks because it does everything I want: Email, Twitter/Facebook, Browsing. It’s a music player AND has FM radio which is great for the gym since the volume for the TVs is blasted on FM stations. And did I mention the Virtual Drum Kit that comes with the phone? I think we all know a certain almost 3 foot tall someone who will LOVE that.
I came so close to getting the boring old phone but I just couldn’t do it. I am SO glad I came home and did more research AND that I didn’t accept what seemed to be the norm “everyone pays this” notion. My life doesn’t require a smartphone. It would be fun but totally luxurious for my needs. And yet, I feel like I got more phone than I could have hoped for without spending anything! Yay! A special thanks to Doug from the Verizon hotline who patiently and graciously made my day.
