I don’t often discuss the business of blogging on Lil-Kid-Things. There are plenty of very successful blogs who do that really well so I tend to leave it to them. However, I do take the time to build into the blog and learn when I can to make it the best it can be. Sometimes that means reading a post about blogging or taking an online course. Other times it means getting away from my desk and attending a conference.
I am not shy about my love of the Type-A-Parent conference. In 2009, while not able to attend (welcome to the world Oscar!) I watched many of the sessions and the Town-Hall meeting via livestream online. In 2010, I went and then missed it again in 2011 (welcome to the world Calvin!) Last year I was back in business and this year I will be attending not only the main conference in Atlanta, but also one of the brand new one-day conferences for advanced learning! I’ll be at the now sold-out Philadelphia conference in April and I can’t wait!
Here’s the thing about blogging for bucks. If you want to do it, and I mean really do it, you have to treat it as a business. That doesn’t mean blogging can’t be fun or that you have to do sponsored posts and reviews all the time. It just means that like any other business venture, you have to invest in it.
This is important for two reasons really. One, when you put yourself out there in the form of time or money, chances are you will act more professionally to get the best return on your investment possible. The other reason is that when you invest in things like classes or conferences, you will get more than money in return. You will learn to be a better blogger. You will make important business connections. You will make friends. THAT is the best part of attending a conference like Type-A. You get the best of the blogging world. The sessions are top-notch and your down time will be spent laughing with friends!

I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. Of course, I can’t make you any promises, but I can tell you that every professional connection I have made in the blogging world either happened at one of the Type-A conferences or as a result of someone I connected with there. It’s not too big, but big enough to really help you take your blogging career to the next level – whatever that is for you. There is nothing quite like sitting down to breakfast next to someone in a conference room, chatting about writing, and a year later getting ready for the launch of your very first book!
I hope to see you in Atlanta!
