Are you ready for picture overload? Well buckle your seatbelts and maximixe your bandwidth because our budget kitchen makeover is finished! I am so excited to share our new and improved space that I am practically about to burst. This project has been a year and a half in the making so lets get started with a walk down memory lane….
When we first looked at this house, the kitchen and dining area looked like this. Notice the lack of dishwasher, old refrigerator and drop-in stove. Not to mention the windowless wall-o-paneling.
It goes on….
Big Ticket Kitchen Items
First on the list was replacing the fridge, and installing a dishwasher. We also decided to convert the stove area from drop-in to freestanding because we didn’t want to have knobs on the front where little hands could reach them. Since this house was built in the 1960s, the standard sizes have changed and none of the new drop-ins would fit so we would have had to make some adjustments anyway. Finally, we added a window to the back wall of the dining area to let in some light!
These were the big ticket items we included in our budget when we first moved into our home. And as you can imagine, we didn’t have much money left to play with after that. Once the appliances were in place, we lived with it like that for a few months. And months. And months….shudder.
DIY Kitchen Makeover
It took us a while to decide on hardware for the cabinets because the sizes were old and strange so nothing fit. We finally decided to fill all the holes and start from scratch. And by we, I mean Jerry because he did this whole project himself as a gift to me!
I wasn’t completely off the hook though because it was my job to remove all the contents of the cabinets and prep them for sanding. Behold, my nightmare.
Once that was done, he got to work!
Meanwhile, our living room looked like this…
Kitchen Makeover Reality
I’m not going to lie, this project was a major pain in the neck. It felt like we would NEVER be done and I often asked myself why we didn’t just buy a house that was already new and ready to be beautiful. But that just isn’t how we roll. We like to have our hands in things. We are going to be in this house for many, many years and I think we are going to love the fact that we have really made it our own!
Jerry did a fantastic job sanding and painting and putting our kitchen back together. Our home is 10 times brighter now just with this simple, albeit time-consuming change. The best part is, it didn’t break the bank!
In the end, all it took was a little bit of paint and a lot of hard work and patience to get the results we wanted. And it was so worth the wait! A huge thank you to my husband for making this happen and to you all for sharing in our kitchen makeover journey!
