One of Oscar’s first words was Mama. However, for months and months, he would never utter it happily. Mama was either a warning or a cry for help. When he was about to touch something that is considered off-limits, he would glance at me sideways and say MaaaaMa! Right before slamming is hands on whatever it was, letting me know, HEY YOU! I am rebelling!
Other uses of the word Mama would come through tears in the middle of the night when he needed me, or when he fell down as if to say, how could you let this happen?
But this week we have turned a corner. Suddenly, when I walk in a room I am greeted with a joyous MAMA!!! And a hug that started from 15 steps away. And he asks for me when I am not here too. Just last night, I was out and Jerry said Oscar was in the bath playing and looked around and said, Mama? And again when it was bedtime. When I got home he stirred and cried a little. I couldn’t wait to give him a big hug and kiss and let him know that I came back.
I guess he likes me afterall.
