I am absolutely positive that Oscar signed milk to me today. Twice! The first time was earlier this afternoon when he was starting to fuss after playing for a while. I looked over and said, “what is it Oscar?” And he did a rudimentary version of the above hand gesture. I thought, hmm that’s interesting. It ALMOST looked like he said milk. And I said, “would you like some milk? Is that what you are saying?” and he got a big smile on his face and reached for me.
Still, I thought, what baby is going to turn down milk when asked point blank? So I remained skeptical. I have been signing to him since about 4 months I think. Nothing much, just “all done”, “more” and “milk”. I figure that will be enough to help him communicate and we can get to things like please and thank you when I care about manners. However, I really wasn’t expecting anything until closer to 8 months. But tonight, I am convinced.
He will be 6 months on Sunday, so you can imagine my shock! I have noticed that his development seems to be more mental than mobile. He seems to really be connecting the dots in his little brain, while lacking the interest in getting from point A to point B. He has rolled over, did the army crawl and is starting to sit up, but not out of an interest to move. It’s more like he figures it out, does it once and then moves on to something else. I guess it makes sense. All babies are different.
So tonight, Jerry fed Oscar a bottle and put him to bed, as is our nightly routine. I came in when he was done eating and we sang and prayed and he went down perfectly. It was a really sweet family moment. Then Jerry and I came out and had our dinner. About 20 minutes after going down, Oscar started to fuss, and fuss some more and finally started to cry. So we thought maybe he lost his paci etc. and began the game of go in, fix it, go out, go in, fix it, go out. But he wouldn’t settle down. All my efforts were in vain. Until the last time I was standing over his crib looking at him and stroking his head, when he looked at me and did the milk sign while grabbing his shirt. So I said, what’s that? And he looked me straight in the eye, held out his hand and signed! I couldn’t believe it! He said milk. Crazy! So I picked him up and he nursed for over 10 minutes (which is usually a full meal). All this AFTER drinking a 6oz bottle. SO I guess he was hungry. And he could tell me! Yay!
Coincidentally, when he was finished, I did the sign for all done (which is shaking both hands at the wrists) and he grabbed my hand and shook it as if to say, “yes mommy, all done.”
And then he went right to sleep.
