Notes from a BlogHer Virgin…

In 2 weeks I will get on a plane and fly to New York City. As I type that all I can hear are the guys from the Pace Picante Sauce commercials saying “NEEEW YOARK CIITEE?” Anyway, so I fly to the city and for 4 days straight I will do nothing but eat, sleep, dream, and inhale all things blog.

I have been blogging for years and until I became a part of the ‘mom blog’ community (last year) I never even knew there was such a thing as a blogging conference. Turns out there are tons of them all over the country and they’ve been going on for years! I guess I spent one too many nights watching Lost instead of catching up on how to transition from Blog to Business. And don’t even get me started on the series finale of Lost! Even now, the anger is rising within me.

I’ll go on.

So BlogHer is hosting its 5th annual Blog conference for Women this August. They change locations each year and last year when I heard about it (as I jealously followed live tweets from Chicago) I knew I had to do everything I could to get there this year. But how?

As a small blog with a humble, yet loyal readership I was unsure about how to go about getting sponsored. Miraculously,  I was selected to be a volunteer for the conference itself and then won a partial sponsorship through a contest (thank you Seed!). Things have REALLY fallen into place for me to go and it just feels really special.

I keep reading about people who are nervous and don’t know what to wear or say and how they will be totally lost. I know I should be one of them because this is my first time too. Yet, somehow, I don’t think I will be lost at all.

I think I will be found.

Every time I get with other bloggers it feels like home. There is just a camaraderie that exists instantly, as with being a mom or working in a specific industry. One friend described my “blog friends” as my co-workers and i couldn’t agree more. And while a conference is on a massive scale, I am looking forward to making those connections. I have a calendar PACKED with events and sessions and notes and plans. I’m collecting phone numbers and deciding what to pack just like everyone else, but I am leaving the nerves in NC. I might need some reminding as we get closer, but for now, I am planning to soak up every last bit of fun and knowledge I can get out of BlogHer and forget about the numbers for a few days!

So if you see me, please come say hi! And don’t mind my big goofy grin. I talk in exclamation points too 🙂

I just love the term co-workers.. that's PERFECT! And good for you for leaving the nerves behind. It'll make for a MUCH better experience if you aren't worrying about everything. Soak it all up and tell us about it when you get back!

BTW, Liz from mom-101.com has an awesome post today about BlogHer. Awesome, I tell ya!

Good for you! I'm glad you are getting the chance to go. You'll have to report back to us in person 🙂

Kristen at Motherhood Uncensored also had a really good BlogHer post today. Or recently. I'm so behind on blog reading that it could have been last week and I'm just now reading it.

BlogHer is what YOU make of it. Don't be shy. Invite yourself places. Meet my BFF, Susan, and give her a real life hug for me.

SQUEEEE! We are going to have so much fun! I remember coming home last year and telling my best friend that I was "totally in my element" while at the conference. I left there wanting to start a blogging commune. Not kidding.

Last year, my roommate won a scholarship (and she ended up paying for our whole room) and we all worked as volunteers (someone stole my space at the registration desk this year…ahem…), GM paid for my gas and parking…I ended up MAKING money on the conference. This year, I'm not so lucky, but maybe some things will fall into place for me too!

Either way, we're going to have a blast!
