The year of close calls {a week of thanksgiving}

I am finding that there are too many things to be thankful for to share in just one week. That’s kinda neat right? I mean I know I am blessed beyond measure, but after one crazy year, it’s feels pretty good to focus on the good things instead of the laundry list of bad things.

2011 has been a year of near-misses for our family. Oscar broke his leg, but there was no permanent damage. Our house was robbed and we lost a few belongings, but we weren’t home when it happened and we got almost everything back. Oscar had a cold sore on his eye requiring an overnight stay in the hospital, but the Doctors were wrong about their initial diagnosis of MRSA. I had a one-two punch, bladder and uterine rupture during my labor with Calvin, but he and I are both healthy and recovered now. We are financially provided for thanks to Jerry’s job and while we were sad to say goodbye to our sweet dog, Krusty, we know that he had a life full of love for almost 15 years.

It’s hard not to look back on this year and think wow, God was taking care of us. I mean on the one hand, we could shake our fists at the sky and be sad. And if I am honest, I spent much of the year doing just that. But wow, it could have been much much worse. I can’t even allow myself to imagine.

Instead of worse, I am now enjoying better. Oscar cracks us up every day with new phrases he is learning. Calvin is already 4 months old and smiling and giggling the days away. It’s a good season and I am trying to savor it.

Just for fun, here are a couple of the gems Oscar unleashed on Jerry during his time off. Apparently, daddy doesn’t know the rules of the house.

Jerry held an apple up to Oscar’s mouth and tried to get him to take a bite. Oscar becoming increasingly frustrated said, “ONE…..TWO…and you BETTER get out of here!”

Jerry scolded Oscar for touching his music equipment, to which Oscar replied, “Dada…you’re being too crazy to me. Calm down. Use your inside voice…Don’t be so crazy to me. That’s better, Dada. Just be happy and not crazy”

Hey, at least he is paying attention!

They say that happy people aren't luckier, they're just better able to see the good side of things. I'm so glad that you've been able to find the silver lining in everything that has happened to you this year!

LOL, don't you love it? I wrote down little "Roan" quotes for years and I am SO GLAD! I wish I had done it for the first two.
