As I sit here trying to think of a time when I have tried something new, I realized that I am having a really hard time landing on one single event in my life that stands out. It’s not because I don’t try new things, but because I am constantly trying new things! Ever since I was a child, I have had this sense of adventure where seeking out the unknown was far more interesting to me than becoming really good at something like say the piano, or the guitar or the clarinet or ballet, or softball, or swim team. Hmmm… maybe instead of trying something new, I should learn how to focus!?
Nah. Where’s the fun in that?
I have discovered many passions over the years by trying new things like traveling to new places such as Israel where I had the chance to float in the Dead Sea, or Peru where I took a 4 day hike to Machu Picchu, or helping to build a church in the Yucatan Jungle in Mexico. I hope this sense of adventure never leaves me.
Even as a mother everything is new. Every stage is new and different and now that we will soon have two boys to care for, I will embark on another adventure! Keeping this perspective really helps me avoid that sinking feeling of stagnation when life seems to be in a boring phase.
Yesterday we needed to try something new so we planted some flowers! This was a first for me WITH Oscar and I have to say, I not only enjoyed it immensely, but Oscar was thrilled to be elbow deep in potting soil. It was just what the Doctor ordered.
In years past, I have tried to expand my horizons by trying exotic foods like Sushi, Escargot, and Wild Boar. I haven’t loved all of these but I feel happy that I tried them! And you can bet I will be getting sushi delivered to the hospital the minute Baby U2 arrives :-). Something I once mocked is now one of my favorite foods! But what if I had never tried it?
When is the last time you tried something new? I would love to hear about your adventures!
