One of the perks of living in Raleigh is the fact that we aren’t more than a couple hours from the beach, the zoo, the mountains and just about any attraction you could ask for (except Disney World – the only drawback). Last summer we visited the NC Aquarium and decided that for the price, we would do much better with an annual pass than just tickets for the day. Not only is the pass good for the Aquarium, it also gets us into the Asheboro Zoo whenever we want. That was the clincher because we love the Zoo!

We decided to pack up the kids and take the 1.5 hour drive one Sunday in January to visit the animals. Since it was winter we weren’t sure what we would actually see since some of them needed to be taken indoors to stay warm. Still, it was a beautiful day and we were up for the challenge.

You know, there is something to be said about low expectations. You are almost ALWAYS in for a pleasant surprise when you don’t expect anything to begin with. We walked around that zoo like we owned the place. There were hardly any other families there and almost every single animal was THISCLOSE to us. It was amazing!!

Hands down, the absolute highlight of the day was seeing the chimps. Moms and babies were right up on the glass playing with each other and interacting with the humans. Mothers were nursing their young and they curiously studied Oscar as he pressed his face to the glass.

I have never seen anything like it!

I don’t know if there is a moral to this story other than sometimes you just need to pick up and go do something worth doing, even if you are unsure of the results. You never know what joy lies in store.
