I’ve been putting off this Monthly Update for a few days now because I just don’t know where to begin. This month has definitely brought the most change for Oscar by far. He has started rolling regularly to get to where he wants, sits up with a teeny bit of help, eats solids with gusto, has become more social, naps well, and pretends to burp! And that’s just to name a few things. This month has really been a lot of fun.
Oscar is really growing into his little personality and has quite a sense of humor! To those who know us, it may not come as a surprise that Jerry and I love to burp out loud. I never win this competition, but that doesn’t mean I don’t try! Well, add this to the list of “things I shouldn’t teach my kid“, because Oscar thinks it’s hilarious. Every time we burp, he stops whatever he is doing, whips his head around and flashes an enormous grin. In the past couple days he has started mimicking the sound, which is both frightening and adorable. A 6 month old going, EH EHH EH is cute, but when all the other moms start coming to me and requesting that my child please stop encouraging bad manners, we may have issues. For now it’s completely amusing.
Really, a lot of the changes I mentioned above have taken place in the past week or so. Interesting, because he just finished a Wonder Week. I’ve been loosely paying attention to their theories in a let’s see if this is accurate kind of way, not so much as fact. But I have to say, it really does seem to be accurate, so far at least. The book talks about mental leaps and how they usually happen around the same time for most babies, thus causing somewhat predictable behavior. I don’t actually OWN the book, but I have read a lot about it here, here and here. I am tempted to get my hands on a copy so I will have it for next time, but I lost my round tuit. Gotta get one of those 😉
Mobility! Oscar is really starting to take off! For now it seems exciting. I am sure that will wear off sooner than later. He rolls really well to the right. He’ll just keep going until he runs into something. He rolls to the left to but not nearly as much. I have also had to rescue him from his belly in the crib a few times. Oh it’s so pitiful and sweet. He also shimmies over to the toys in his crib and has mastered the art of turning his crib soother on and off…and on and off, and on and off. Holding him is also short-lived these days. He would much rather go over there, or grab that thing, or if I could just reeeeeach that monkey! I know I will miss my snuggle baby but I am excited that he is enjoying this new phase of exploration.
As far as eating goes, anything goes! He has had most vegetables and fruits as well as cereal with breastmilk. He LOVES drinking from his sippy cup and banging it on the table. He loves eating from a spoon but hasn’t really shown any interest in chunks yet. I’ve given him tiny pieces of avocado and banana but he doesn’t seem to like the texture just yet. He LOVES watching us chew. It’s probably the funniest thing in the world, after burping.
banging cups is scary but I MUST do it!
Friends! Oscar loves other babies. He does really great in the nursery and we’ve gone on a few play dates and he is just enthralled! I think he is at ease when he sees other people his size and is able to relax and enjoy himself. We also took our very first trip to Marbles Kid’s Museum and he had a ball! I forsee many more trips in our future (membership anyone??)
Sleeping is still up and down. We’ve had a handful of really great nights (7 hours here, 9 hours there) but have no idea why or how it happened. I seem to do the same things every day and sometimes he sleeps and sometimes he doesn’t. In the meantime, I am just learning to not let it drive me crazy. I’m so not there, but I am trying! His naps have normalized again and he is pretty consistently taking 2 naps a day. 1-1.5 hours in the morning and about 2 hours in the afternoon. He generally goes to bed at about 7pm and wakes up twice to nurse (FULL feedings) before getting up for the day around 7am. Really would LOVE to move on from the midnight snacks 🙂 He wakes up happy. I LOVE this! It’s still one of our favorite things to go and get Oscar up for the day, or after a nap. We sing the good morning song, he laughs, we hug. It’s adorable! I think for 6 months he is doing phenomenal. It could be MUCH worse and I am so thankful for the rest we do get.
