Ugh. You know how they say the end of the world is coming in 2012? I think maybe they were off by a year because as far as I am concerned, 2011 can suck it. I feel like every other week there has been some catastrophic event in my family or those close to us.
SO. over. it.
There is too much sadness going around and it really does seem to be going around. And around and around and around.
Online, there is an air of levity if only because we only have 140 characters or less so why not use it to make a joke or hand out a few virtual high-fives?
This, I think, is why Social Media is such a boon. It’s part business and part acting. We can be whomever we want to be. No one expects us to wax philosophical on Twitter, and friendships are easy and light.
But behind the scenes? There is destruction. There is pain. There is grief.
It’s almost too much to bear.
So how can we deal with hard things?
By hugging our loved ones and telling them we love them.
By supporting our friends when they are hurting.
By raising money for families in need.
By spreading the word when people need help.
By being honest about where we are.
By opening up to those closest to us when we need help.
By rejoicing with those who rejoice.
And mourning with those who mourn.
No one has it easy all of the time. If nothing else 2011 has made me greatly aware of this.
At the end of the day, the beginning of the day, the middle of the night, and all the times in between we just have to keep going. One foot and then another, caring, giving kisses, loving. Letting each other know that they matter.
And a virtual high five never hurt anyone…
