You’ve booked your trip to Santorini, and it’s time to get excited! Greece is amazing—you knew that already, which is why your trip is booked! But how should you spend each day?
Whether you love relaxation, adventure, or a mixture of both, one thing is certain. You must hike the six-mile Fira to Oia hike along the caldera.
Explore Famous Towns
Santorini is a big island, but most tourists will stay in or near either Fira or Oia. These two towns are the most famous due to their cliffside locations and beautiful views, but they can get crowded as the day progresses.
Starting early in the morning in Fira, the path will take you through nearly deserted streets. The official hike starts at Hotel Atlantis, which is 6.5 miles from its end in Oia. It’s also possible to hike in the other direction, so do what works for you.
Marvel at Impressive Architecture
Greek architecture is some of the most beautiful in the world. Santorini’s colors and shapes are as stunning as the photos on the internet. You’ll want to stop every few steps to capture the scenery.
Not only are the structures unique, but they are built right into the cliffside one after another, buildings on top of buildings so beautiful you’ll dream of hopping the roofs like a staircase.
Enjoy the Calm Before the Cruisers
Starting your hike in the early morning hours is critical if you want some space from the cruise tourists and night owls. In summer, 2-6 cruise ships dock offshore each day, so the crowds can get thick.
Enjoy the morning peace while you can! We started at 8 am, and 6:30-7 am would have been even better.
Extend Your Hike (or not)
For the extra-adventurous, add the hike out to Skaros Rock, making it a nearly 10-mile walk to Oia.
After an accidental detour onto the Skaros Rock path, my family of four (including a 12-year-old) decided to backtrack to the original trail, but it sure looked pretty!
Embrace the Struggle
There is something invigorating about this particular hike. It isn’t easy, but it is so inspiring. Several times, my son asked if this was worth it. My answer was always yes, even as I was huffing and puffing along in the heat.
There is nothing like hiking on a volcano with your family while overlooking the Aegean Sea. I wouldn’t trade it! The feeling of victory when we finished was unmatched, and I was so proud of my family.
Take Your Time from Fira to Oia
Load up your day pack with snacks and plenty of water. This is not a race. Take breaks whenever and as often as you like. It’s not like you have nothing to look at!
We brought a bag of chips and protein bars in our bags, along with lots of bottled water and cooling towels for the heat. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
Bring Money
I have great news for you if you consumed all your snacks before arriving. A small snack bar about 3/4 of the way from Fira to Oia sells chips, soda, smoothies, and beer if you can catch it when it’s open.
A nice cold beer never tasted so good! During our visit in June 2024, they accepted both Euros and credit cards. Check out this detailed map of the caldera points of interest for more info.
But seriously, have you seen this view?
After the snack shop, you’ll still have a ways to go before the end of the trail. I hope you are fueled up because much of it is uphill.
However, you’ll see one spectacular view after another, giving you plenty of reasons for rest breaks and photo ops.
Wear Good Shoes
This hike is really more of a walk. That said, it’s still over six miles! You want to keep your feet happy. Once you approach Oia, the path can be slippery and uneven as it fills with small pebbles. You’ll want to be sure the right shoes will help you avoid unnecessary injuries.
Magnificent Oia
The moment you have been waiting for. You made it to this iconic view over Oia. Boats are in the water, photoshoots are happening on rooftops, and blue domes are in the background. Is this what heaven looks like?
It’s Time for Vacation
As you make your way through the streets of Oia, it may feel jarring to transition from the quiet path to the bustling activity of the town. But beauty is everywhere. And lunch is next! Who could ask for more?
You will never hike the caldera of Santorini for the first time again. This is your moment. You did it. Was it worth it?
