Wichita has a way of surprising people. I was in town for a conference, and the city won me over with its unique blend of charm, humor, and delicious foodie scene. If you’re looking for fun things to do in Wichita, Kansas, my list is full of local flavor, hands-on fun, and a few hidden gems that even the locals vouch for.

It’s a fun city with surprises around every corner. The Arkansas River runs through town, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy on and around the river. Wichita also boasts a vibrant arts scene and a shared commitment to conserving and preserving indigenous history, wildlife, and nature.
My first visit to Kansas was last year, where we spent most of our time in Kansas City, Kansas. So I was already excited to see more of the state when I bought my TBEX conference ticket for Wichita.
Tour the Brewery Scene in Wichita
When I decided to attend, I knew exactly nothing about Wichita. But what I love about TBEX is that they don’t just have conferences in different cities; they build in time and events around each location so everyone has the chance to really learn the flavor of the towns.
My first order of business was to take a (mostly) walking tour of some of the area’s many craft breweries. Each location offered delicious brews, some had food, and they all had charm.

What I love about Wichita breweries is their spirit of collaboration over competition. Everywhere we went, someone mentioned how they collaborated with another local brewery or restaurant for an event, charity, or private event.
Even though we only visited four locations, it was enough to know I want to see more! Wichita really has a lot to offer.
Where to find the breweries
River City Brewing Company – Right in Old Town with a large dining room, outdoor seating and event space on the second level. My recommendation – try the Reuben!
150 N Mosley
Wichita, KS. 67202
The Leprechaun’s Lab – This downtown pub has tons of charm and even more great beers. If you’re brave, try a spicy brew made with jalapeno or the Lucky Charms version for a sweet tooth. There is no kitchen here, but you can bring your own takeout if you wish.
630 E. Douglas ave ste#150
Wichita KS 67202

Tor Brewing – This massive space is just across the road from the INTRUST Bank Arena so it’s the perfect place to hang before a hockey game or concert. In addition to a tasty selection of craft brews, the food is great too. I recommend the loaded French fries. You won’t be sorry!
222 S Commerce St.
Wichita, KS 67202
Wichita Brewing Company – We visited the Delano location and it’s another great multi-floor space with lots of a charm and a great rooftop to hang out. They have a massive pizza oven too so grab a wood-fired pizza while you’re there and stay a while.

Wichita is for Animal Lovers
Wichita has not one but two incredible animal habitats. I spent some time in both Tanganyika Wildlife Park and Sedgwick County Zoo, and wow, what a treat!
Each of these locations deserves more than a paragraph, so stay tuned. I can say they are both worth the visit for unique reasons.

Sedgewick County Zoo is home to not one but four baby elephants born this year, and they are adorable! We enjoyed watching them play during the conference closing event and were treated to a preview of the after-hours Wild Lights lantern festival happening now through December 21st.

For something completely different, Tanganyika Wildlife Park is an interactive zoo with hands-on experiences throughout. You can walk among kangaroos, feed giraffes, talk to cockatoos, and let lemurs climb all over you.
Would you like to save this?
This experience was unlike any other, and I can’t wait to share more about it. It’s a must-visit destination for animal lovers.
Blending Nature and Technology
Our conference hotel was conveniently located right on the riverfront. A stay at Hyatt Regency Wichita is easily walkable to some of the city’s most popular attractions.
Keeper of the Plains at Sunset
This iconic 44-foot statue stands where the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers meet, and it’s stunning at sunset. Plan to visit when the Ring of Fire ignites around the base each evening to honor the area’s indigenous tribes.

Exploration Place Science Museum
Curious minds will love this riverside museum. With flight simulators, interactive science exhibits, and a planetarium, Exploration Place makes learning feel like play. It’s a great indoor activity for hot summer afternoons or chilly winter days.

We toured the new playground, which is nearing the end of construction. It will be an incredible space for kids to explore and play outside.
Grow Plant Bar
Part coffee shop, part greenhouse, Grow Plant Bar is the best blend of taste and hobby. Order a cocktail or latte while you browse the plant selection, and enjoy the natural light. They also host workshops so you can plant your own creation to take home.
My visit coincided with the release of Taylor Swift’s Life of a Showgirl album, so I enjoyed the Swift-themed cocktail. It was delicious!

For a relaxing evening, head to Beau Monde Spa West for a massage or facial. Then, enjoy the infrared sauna and salt room as you relax.
On your way out, top off your visit with a few goodies from their boutique.

The Warren West theater is not far from the spa, and after my visit, I took a little time out from the conference to catch the Taylor Swift movie before heading back to the hotel.
The theater has old Hollywood charm and is enormous, with plenty of screens to host movies of any genre. They also have an IMAX theater.
Wichita is for the Locals
I loved wandering downtown Wichita. There are so many art-filled nooks and interesting sculptures to admire without ever setting foot inside a building.
For a night out with a little mystery, slip underground into Dockum, a speakeasy tucked beneath the Ambassador Hotel. The cocktails are as beautiful as they are flavorful, and the moody lighting makes it perfect for date night or an after-conference unwind.
Our group spent time in a room called the Vault and had a great time. Live music was just getting started as we left. Next time, I’ll stay longer!
Another great spot is The Workroom. It’s a local favorite for Wichita-made goods, home décor, and apparel. If you want to bring home something that truly represents the city, this is the place to shop. They also have a champagne bar in the store, which truly makes it a one-stop shop.

I could easily spend another week in Wichita. What a great city! As I share more about my visit to Kansas, let me know what surprises you and if you have any questions.
The more I learn about the Sunflower State, the more I want to continue to explore and uncover its beautiful secrets.
