Everywhere My Family of Four Stayed in Greece

When my husband and I decided to visit Greece with our boys, I knew I needed to plan our accommodations well in advance. Here is a list of everywhere my family stayed in Greece on our two-week trip.

If you are new to European travel, you should know that planning a family vacation in Europe can be tricky, especially if you intend to have four or more people in a room.

A small courtyard with a white plaster building, vibrant bougainvillea, a hot tub, and benches. A bell tower and the roofline of a church are visible in the background.

You can often find hotels with rooms for two or even three people, but four is an issue for some reason. Some hotel suites are available, but they are in limited supply and can be pricey.

For this reason, I made most of our reservations using Booking.com, a well-known site that offers hotel and private rental options. Our trip to Greece was a mixture of the two.

A Note on Booking Apartments

My general rule for booking apartments or smaller hotels is to make sure they are well-located, have been on Booking.com for a while, and have about 100 or more reviews.

What I like about this site is that you can book now and pay later, just like a regular hotel chain. While we don’t use it as much in the States, Booking is widely used in Europe. We also used it for our stay before our Baltic cruise a few years ago, and I’m a big fan.

You can also message the property owner directly, and many places have free cancelation until a few days before your arrival. I am also going back into my reservations to see newer reviews to be sure things haven’t changed since I booked.

I do this with hotels, too!

Where We Stayed in Athens, Greece

We spent four nights in Athens. Since we packed light, an apartment was the best option in our price range. We chose a studio with a kitchen and a washing machine to save money on meals and keep up with our laundry.

The apartment was on a small street in the Plaka neighborhood, within walking distance of the Acropolis, with great shopping areas and many restaurants. It was the perfect location for everything we wanted to do.

It was great having a full kitchen for a few meals and breakfast and there is a grocery store within walking distance.

A kitchen counter with a concrete top has several grocery bags, a roll of paper towels, and a red drying mat. The backsplash features a yellow and black checkered pattern.

What It Was Like

We were in a studio on the first floor (which is actually the second floor by American standards) with a small balcony and enclosed terrace.

There is a sitting area, dining table, a sofa, and two large areas with queen beds separated by a bookcase.

A person is packing a backpack near a table with plants and a glass top in a modern living area. Another person is seen near a bed in the background. The room features a world map wall art and a red sofa.

It was perfect for our family, and the only downside was that the washing machine in the unit did not work. However, we were very close to a great laundromat and used it on the last day, so we were ready to keep going.

The top-floor apartment has a large terrace with a view of the Acropolis, but it wasn’t available for our dates.

Would we recommend it?

Yes! The beds were comfortable, we could walk everywhere, and it felt safe. The a/c was also very cold, which was much appreciated! This is a studio apartment, so if you want more privacy than a large bookcase between “rooms,” it may not be for you. The shower is also pretty small, but it was clean and sufficient.

They have three apartments available. The one we booked is called a “studio apartment.” The one with the terrace view of the Acropolis is on the top floor and is called a “suite with balcony.”

Where We Stayed in Meteora, Greece

Oikia Guesthouse Hotel

We spent one night in Kalabaka to see Meteora’s impressive clifftop monasteries. Here, we booked a family room in the Oikia Guesthouse Hotel, which was amazing!

Three people walk down a sidewalk beside a stone-sided building with a "Guesthouse" sign. Rocky cliffs and residential buildings are seen in the background under a cloudy sky.

What It Was Like

I loved our schedule, but I wish we could have packed up this hotel and taken it with us everywhere. We were in the “family room with terrace,” which had a queen bed in one room and two twin-size beds in the other.

There is a door to separate the two rooms, but the bathroom is off the main bedroom, so the kids still needed access.

The beds were so comfortable and clean. The a/c was amazing. It was nice to have a balcony for fresh air and a little view, but we didn’t really use it much. There is also breakfast for an additional fee (it was 10eur each when we were there), but we decided to sleep in before checking out.

However, they made us Americanos to-go and saved croissants for the boys to take with us. I thought that was so sweet!

A town with white houses and red rooftops is nestled beside rocky cliffs. The sky is partly cloudy with hints of sunset light.

Would we recommend it?

Absolutely. We only stayed one night in Meteora, but if we had more time, we would definitely stay longer! The location was great, and the staff was wonderful. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and updated.

Where We Stayed in Delphi, Greece

Hotel Kouros

We made another overnight stop in the mountains to see the ancient ruins of Delphi. This hotel had a quad room, meaning we each had a twin-size bed. It was very simple but adequate, and it came with a free breakfast!

Four people are laying on separate beds in a hotel room, looking relaxed. The room has neutral-colored decor, a modern painting on the wall, and a lamp between two of the beds.

What It Was Like

This room was comfortable for the price. We each had a twin-size bed, the bathroom and shower were clean, and we had a little balcony. There was a small refrigerator and a TV, but we didn’t use it.

The main downside was unreliable WiFi, which was really only an issue at night when we were all winding down. The building also does not have an elevator, so keep that in mind if you have limited mobility.

Would we recommend it?

If you’re looking for a no-nonsense place to stay the night with a tasty breakfast in a convenient location, Kouros is great. It won’t win any luxury awards, but we would stay again.

There were plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance, as well as a great view just around the corner.

A breakfast plate with a croissant, cucumber slices, tomato, hard-boiled egg, and a spinach pastry. A bowl of yogurt with cereal and a glass of orange juice are beside the plate.

Where We Stayed in Milos, Greece

Dioni Lux Inn

We spent another 3 nights on the magical island of Milos. Here, we booked an apartment-style hotel. The building has a few different options, but it’s not a large resort at all.

It also had a small kitchenette, and our host left some pastries and coffee for us.

A white building with green shutters and a stone archway under a clear blue sky. Two people stand near the entrance. A path leads to an outdoor seating area.

What It Was Like

Dioni Lux Inn is a small little hotel in a neighborhood setting. We already planned to rent a car, but you will definitely need it to stay here. The sights on the island are spread out, but we didn’t spend more than 20 minutes driving in most directions.

The apartment itself was fantastic. We loved the small kitchen area, and the boys each had a twin-size bed. My husband and I had a king bed in the bedroom and a small balcony. There are two bathrooms, and that was definitely welcome since we had a couple of beach days.

Clear, calm sea waters with visible rocks beneath, and a coastal village with white buildings in the background under a clear blue sky.

Would we recommend it?

This apartment is great for families. The twin beds are in the common area, so it wouldn’t work for two couples.

We loved being able to walk down to the small beach and enjoy the peaceful area. Parking was easy and convenient right by the building. The A/C worked great and we were very comfortable. I loved this stay and would definitely stay again if given the chance.

Where We Stayed in Santorini, Greece

Megalochori Villa

Santorini offers so many lodging options, from traditional to modern, and you can spend as much or as little as you want. Since I knew we would rent a car for our three-night stay, I opted for a villa in the less touristy village of Megalochori.

We were close enough to drive to the beaches of Perissa or the busy activities like the famous Fira to Oia hike.

It had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and an outdoor hot tub/plunge pool. You can see it in the photo at the top of this page from our private courtyard.

A tidy, well-lit living room with arched ceilings, a beige couch, a wooden coffee table, and a butterfly chair. A small dining area with a table and chairs is in the foreground.

We knew we would be doing a lot of sightseeing on the caldera, so not having a view from the villa was OK with us.

Plus, it felt so authentic and homey to be in our own place away from the crowds.

A quaint outdoor space features a stone floor, white walls, a light blue door, a potted plant climbing the wall, and white furniture, including a table with an attached bench and a small round table.

What It Was Like

The villa felt like home. We instantly fell in love with everything about it, including the town of Megalochori. The beds were comfortable, and there was a washing machine, which is always such a huge help! By the way, these laundry detergent sheets are my new travel must-have. I used them everywhere.

Parking for the villa is a little walk away in a central location, but it was close enough and convenient. We loved the plunge pool, and the kitchen was more than adequate.

Would we recommend it?

We loved having so much space and privacy. The courtyard separated the two sleeping spaces, with a private bathroom in each, so this location would be great for two couples as well as families with older children.

We would definitely recommend this location and villa. It was the perfect feather in the cap of an amazing trip to Greece.

  1. How did you get from city to city in Greece? I saw where you rented cars but wasn’t sure? What airline did you fly there?

    1. This is another whole post I’m working on! But on the mainland, we walked around Athens with one day trip to Corinth. We rented a car to get to the mountains. Then flew to our first island, and took a ferry to the next one, then flow out from there! All hands on deck hah!
