This Idyllic Florida Hotspot Won My Heart

South Walton, Florida, is a hidden gem on the Gulf Coast with pristine beaches, charming towns, and plenty of activities to entertain you.

Whether you’re a foodie, a wine lover, or someone who loves soaking up coastal vibes, this slice of paradise has it all.

If you’re planning a summer vacation or escaping the cold winter months, the Emerald Coast is waiting with open arms and the best Florida sunsets you could ask for.

As a Florida native who grew up in Clearwater, I deeply love the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America?) and the towns that line Florida’s west coast. I didn’t think I could love a Florida town as much as my home, but South Walton stole my heart, and I can’t wait to return.

The iconic white sand and serene ocean waves set the stage, but South Walton offers a wealth of hidden treasures to explore both on and off the coast. It was an instant yes when I was invited to learn more about the area.

Quaint Towns & Coastal Charm on 30A

Florida’s scenic 30A highway runs through a stretch of beach towns that offer everything from white-sand beaches to vibrant communities.

You can bike, walk, or drive between each community, and it’s so fun to see how different they are despite being so close together.

We had a whirlwind tour of the area, and choosing a favorite is hard!

A picturesque street scene at dusk featuring charming, multi-story buildings with balconies and a distinct turret, surrounded by small trees and a grassy area.

Rosemary Beach has an upscale European vibe, with cobblestone streets and gas lanterns. Enjoy bike rides, charming shops, and plenty of restaurants to satisfy your appetite.

For an East Coast old world feel, check out my thoughts on St. Augustine with kids.

Seaside is known for adorable pastel cottages. As the filming location of The Truman Show, this quaint town is perfect for a stroll, boutique shopping, or grabbing a bite at Airstream Row.

I loved browsing the shelves at Sundog Books, and in case you’re wondering, I did not leave empty-handed.

If you’re craving sophistication, Alys Beach stuns with its white stucco buildings, Mediterranean-inspired courtyards, and fine dining options.

It was so reminiscent of my recent trip to Greece I could have stayed there all day. Of course, it didn’t hurt to have our fill of cocktails and small bites at the Crafted Festival!

Home to Grayton Beach State Park and funky local spots like The Red Bar, artsy Grayton Beach has a laid-back, bohemian vibe.

This is the beach I could see myself parked at for at least a week.

Visit Defuniak Springs

If you want a break from the ocean, step back in time with a trip to Defuniak Springs, which is just a short drive inland.

This charming small town boasts historic homes, antique shops, and one of the world’s only perfectly round natural lakes, Lake DeFuniak.

Small white library building with a red door, surrounded by greenery. The facade has a sign reading "Library" and the number 3 above the entrance.

Book lovers can explore the Walton-DeFuniak Library, Florida’s oldest continuously operating library, which has also become a bit of a museum full of ancient artifacts. This is a great stop for kids and history-loving grownups alike.

Make sure to grab lunch at a nearby cafe and enjoy this picturesque town’s slower pace.

Wine Tasting – Yes, Really!

Who says the beach and wine don’t mix? South Walton is home to a handful of great spots for wine lovers.

We toured Chautauqua Winery and tasted several Florida-grown varieties made from muscadine grapes. I had no idea Florida had wineries, so this was really educational!

Beach Bonfire with 30A Blaze: A Must-Do Experience

Imagine sitting under a starry sky with your toes in the sand, a crackling fire in front of you, and waves in the background. That’s what a beach bonfire with 30A Blaze offers.

It may sound cliche to say I saved the best for last, but if I could have bottled up the feeling I had sitting by this fire, I would have.

Whether celebrating a special occasion or wanting a memorable night with friends and family, 30A Blaze provides the firepit, chairs, tiki torches, and even s’mores supplies. You can even cater a full meal or add a live musician.

These bonfires are legal and professionally set up, so you can relax without worrying about cleanup. Pro tip: Reserve in advance—this is a popular activity and well worth it!

Where to Stay in Walton County

After looking into the incredible options, choosing where to stay will depend on your travel style. If you want to be right on the beach, one of the above towns on 30a would make a fantastic home base.

If you plan to have a car, consider staying in nearby Sandestin. We were hosted at the beautiful Hotel Effie, a Mariott property in a gated community. It was convenient, comfortable, and beautiful.

It has everything you need and then some, including its own walkable shopping area, bike trails, marina, and golf course.

Next on my list is trying out one of the local RV parks! I can’t wait to return to Walton County with my family to explore together.
