For some weekend fun (or weeknight fun, no judging), I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure your next date night includes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It’s so much more than a sequel. Read on for my spoiler-free input on the funniest movie I’ve seen this year.
I’ve been excited about this movie for a long time now, not just because the first one was good (it was) or because Groot is adorable (he is) or because Chris Pratt and his dieting is ALL OF US. For me, it’s as simple as a shiny new Marvel thing finally made it’s way to the screen and I am a moderately huge fan.
I say moderately because I need you to not ask me for specifics about anything because I also have a bad memory. I’m definitely not your girl for any canon in any universe, so just let that go.
I had planned to re-watch Guardians of the Galaxy in advance of our screening this week because my memories of Starlord and his crew had already gone the way of Bing Bong (may he rest in peace) but we didn’t get to it so I went right into this movie cold. And I am so glad I did! Let’s go.
Official Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Synopsis
Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand.
Vol. 2 is fast-paced and fun from the moment it starts until the very end (make sure you stay for the credits!) with a surprising range of emotions in between. I realize I just mentioned my terrible memory, but I really think this was even funnier than the original. If you’re like me, Drax will quickly rise to the top of your list of favorites and you’ll hang on his every word. You might even miss a few because you can’t stop laughing long enough to hear all of his lines.
In fact, each of the characters were well-developed and even more interesting the more we learned about them. In many ways, you’ll forget this is a sequel because it’s just a really fun, solid film with some new and old characters throughout. There are a few cameos that will be fun for the die-hard fans to hunt for.
Save Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for Date Night
Like the first film, Vol. 2 is a bit heavy on the violence (not too gory but high body count) and sexual humor. The timing and delivery of the jokes definitely bring the laughs and we thoroughly enjoyed the story as grown-ups. But my official opinion is to save this one for the tweens and older when it comes to kids. The PG-13 rating is spot on.
My 8-year old loves what he knows about the Guardians but we’re going to wait until he’s at least double digits to let him see it. And this is where my husband and I differ a little. He of course remembers watching all the movies from the 70s and 80s that were just as intense so he tends to be a little more lenient than me. I’m a bit conservative when it comes to movies and I’m hoping to keep the killing sprees (no matter how cartoonish) at bay as long as possible. It can be a struggle because we can’t wait to enjoy movies like this as a family. But I don’t mind waiting a little longer.
That said, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the perfect movie to pair with a dinner date! You and your sweetie are sure to return home feeling good and humming some of your favorite classic songs. Sounds like a win to me!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (PG-13) is in theaters today! (May 5, 2017) and has a running time of 2 hours 18 Minutes.
Have you seen it yet?
