What to make with Fresh Strawberries
Fresh strawberries go with just about everything and that makes me want make all the things!
There are so many ways to use fresh strawberries aside from washing them and eating them.
I’m sure you can see why strawberry season is my favorite!
When is Strawberry Season?
In the United States, the “national strawberry season” according to Eckert’s runs January through November.
Here in North Carolina, sometime between April-June is when you can really see the peak strawberry season.
While you can typically find fresh strawberries year-round, the month of June is where most states will see the best crops.
Can You Freeze Fresh Strawberries?
Yes, strawberries can be frozen for up to six months! This is great news for those of us who got ambitious and bought a 5lb flat at the fruit stand. Ahem.
For best results, slice the green off, pat dry and slice the strawberries to freeze.
You can even oven-dry strawberries for a sweet-to-snack-on treat. These are great for kids!
I recommend using your frozen strawberries for smoothies and ice cream rather than baked goods. Go ahead and make those now!
Tips for Baking with Strawberries
Ripe red strawberries are so delicious because of how juicy and sweet they are.
You can make so many different easy recipes with strawberries because just a little effort changes them completely!
When using them in a sauce or topping, sprinkle your chopped strawberries with some sugar and let sit for a few minutes.
This process will draw out the juices even more!
That said, if you are using strawberries in a cake or muffins, follow the recipe with care and don’t crush them too much unless the recipe calls for it.
I like to dust my chopped strawberries with flour to keep the juices in while baking so they play nice with the batter.
