Heart Shaped Rice Krispie Treats – Shopping List
Inspired by an old Valentine‘s Day standby, these conversation heart treats are such a fun food to make. Have the kids join in and try their hands at putting on their cooking caps!
When you can have them hop in and help with this Rice Krispies treat recipe, it’s a great way to show them that baking and cooking can be fun too.
Ingredients:
- Mini Marshmallows
- Rice Krispie Cereal
- Butter
- Colored melting chocolate – White, Pink, Purple, Blue, Green, Yellow & Orange (or desired colors)
- Shortening
- Edible Marker
- Piping Bags
- Heart Shaped Cookie Cutter
- 1-2 Tbsp Butter
Prepare the Valentine Rie Krispie Day Treat Recipe
Place marshmallows and butter in a large pot and heat on medium/low heat stirring frequently until completely melted and smooth.
Remove from heat and pour in Rice Krispies or other crispy rice cereal.
Fold in mixing until all the cereal is coated with the marshmallow mixture. Sometimes I like to spray my hands with nonstick cooking spray and just mix it myself to save time. Whatever works!
To Make The Rice Krispie Treats Into Hearts
You have two options at this point for creating your hearts.
Option 1
Press the cereal mixture into a parchment lined 13×9 inch pan and allow it to cool completely.
Once cooled remove the treats from the pan and cut out hearts with a cookie cutter.
Option 2
Line your surface with wax paper or parchment paper. Butter your hands and the cookie cutter.
Working quickly press cereal mixture into the cookie cutter to form hearts. Continue until all the cereal mixture is used.
To Decorate the Heart Shaped Krispie Treat Recipe
Working with one color at a time place candy melts in a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 30 second increments stirring in between until melted and smooth.
If necessary to create a smooth texture add in shortening 1 tsp at a time until desired consistency is reached.
Place the melted chocolates in a piping bag and cut off the end creating a small hole.
Pipe melted chocolate around the edge of each treat outlining the heart shape. Then fill in the heart with melted chocolate. Smooth with a knife to create an even finish.
Allow to cool completely.
Repeat with additional colors until all treats are coated.
How to Add Sayings On Top Of The Valentine’s Heart Rice Krispie Treats Recipe
Use an edible marker to write on the hearts, if you make a mistake you can wipe it off with a moist paper towel.
Then melt pink or red candy melts and place them in a piping bag. Cut a small hole in the end and trace letters with the melted candy. You can also freehand the words if you’d like.
Cool to let the chocolate harden and enjoy. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
You could also try using a silicone mold to make letters like I did on these chocolate covered wafers.
Variations
Valentine’s Day is such a fun time of the year that I just can’t resist such cute treats. Anything that requires me to use my heart cookie cutter is one recipe I want to make!
Feel free to change up the color of the candy melts, or use frosting with food coloring added to the top of the marshmallow treats.
I know that sometimes not all ingredients are available or on hand so winging it here and there can still provide a great recipe. The icing may not harden when dry like the melting chocolate so that is something to look out for.
If you don’t have a heart cookie cutter, do your best at cutting out a heart shape by hand.
The cereal and marshmallows may be a bit pliable because of the butter and marshmallows, so you might be able to round out the edges and shape them a bit if you cut them out by hand.
I also think that you could use chocolate cereal to have another look and flavor as well! Mix in a few cups of that flavor and see what you think!
These heart treats would be perfect in a treat gift bag along with these cute Valentine’s Day cards!
