If you are looking for what to serve with fried cabbage, this low budget dinner option with loads of veggies and flavor is just what you need.

Our easy southern fried cabbage with sausage meal will warm you right up!

Instead of relying on fried cabbage as a side dish, we turned it into a one-pan meal.

Sausage and Cabbage Skillet Serving Dish

Southern fried cabbage with kielbasa is one of my favorite low-cost dinners to make and it is so easy.

This delicious dish starts with cabbage of course, what to serve with it is completely up to you!

I like making this as a one-pan meal so I mix it all together. One popular way to prepare it is with bacon grease and I can’t argue with that flavor.

But for this recipe, I’m going with kielbasa instead. My kids love it when I make sheet pan kielbasa and vegetables too, so why not?

Fried Cabbage Meal Ingredients

To make this easy dinner, you just need a large skillet and a few simple ingredients.

It’s a versatile list, so if you have another veggie in your fridge that you need to use, feel free to add it or swap it in.

Shopping List:

  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Butter (or olive oil)
  • Balsamic Vinegar
  • Paprika
  • Smoked Sausage (kielbasa)
  • Crushed red pepper flakes
  • salt and pepper (to taste)

Cabbage is such a hearty veggie. I love cooking with it.

I love to fry it up because you get all that yummy tender cabbage without it getting mushy.

What to Serve with Fried Cabbage

Sautéed cabbage makes a great low carb side dish. It would go great with anything from corned beef to pork chops to pot roast.

When I think of cabbage, I tend to picture corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day, but there are so many other options for this great recipe!

Take your cabbage from Irish holiday to traditional southern side dish with just a handful of ingredients.

Our recipe is not just a side dish, it’s a complete meal full of chopped veggies and beef smoked sausage.

Enjoy it with a side of cornbread or homemade biscuits and you’re in for a treat.

The whole thing is done in about 30 minutes so it’s another great weeknight dinner or prep meal for lunch recipes.

That is, if it lasts until the next day!

How to make Southern Fried Cabbage with Sausage

Begin by heating half the butter or oil over medium heat.

Then, add carrots, onions and garlic and sauté for 2-3 minutes.

Add the balsamic vinegar, the rest of the butter and stir in the smoked sausage to brown.

After sautéing most of the veggies and meat in butter, add the cabbage last and let it simmer.

The challenge here will be having a skillet that is big enough to hold all that goodness.

Season with a bit of paprika and red pepper flakes.

Then slowly add green cabbage a handful at a time, allowing it to wilt a little before you add more.

Once your cabbage reaches your desired consistency, serve immediately and enjoy!

This sausage skillet meal is full of bold flavors and is my very favorite way to use chopped cabbage.

And if you can believe it, my kids love it too!

  1. 5 stars
I love fried cabbage and sausage and have struggled to find a recipe that tastes amazing, until now! I absolutely loved this so much that as soon as dinner was over I had to copy this recipe to have it at my fingertips whenever I’m in the mood for it! I would have given it 10 stars if I could have!

  2. Thanks Andrea,
My mom made fried cabbage a lot, but we (up in West Virginia ) only made it with some bacon grease and cabbage and white sugar.
